In this episode, I tell you about The Unschool Challenge, share some family news and a couple of resources, and ponder lots of unschooling thoughts and ideas along the way. Just what I need when I feel like I have let the ball drop. Her conversational approach gently encourages and there are no words of judgement within its pages. I can't turn up on her doorstep for a cup of tea and a chat so re-reading the book will have to suffice. I can see myself coming back to this book again and again to remind myself of the big picture. A gently gently, let's all move along together kind of way. This way that Sue advocates sits so much better with me. I hated the stand offs and arguments and battle of wills. I for one, hated trying to force my children into doing anything. And you know what? My gut says she's right. Does this mean you let them do whatever they want? Stick a knife into an electrical socket perhaps? That's unparenting Sue argues. Surely we have to force children to do what's right? Otherwise they would run riot over us. But this goes against the 'conventional wisdom' of parenting that's out there. We teach our children to 'do unto others as you would have them do unto you' but do we do that ourselves? What happens when we actually live that phrase? A family that grows closer together. She has really made me look anew at how we interact as a family. Perhaps it’s for everyone because aren’t we all called to love? It’s for anyone interested in living a life of unconditional love.

Tell everyone what I think radical unschooling is really all about. I'm hoping to change this negative image. If we decide to radically unschool, won’t life become chaotic? Surely our kids will become wild and out of control? Sue says: 'Many people think radical unschooling is an irresponsible thing to do. But what if we go one step further and let our children make their own decisions about, not only their education but all aspects of their lives? What if we radically unschool? Perhaps this sounds like a recipe for disaster. If we unschool, we allow our kids to learn what interests them.
